HYDROFOIL IN DUBAI
If you ever wondered how hydrofoils work many explanations are floating around and one of the most popular ones goes something like this. Hydrofoils are like airplane wings are curved surfaces where one side is shorter than the other because fluid particles must travel from the leading edge (Front side of the wing) to the trailing edge (Backside of the wing) in the same amount of time, so fluid over the top surface must be going faster than the lower side of the wing (the longer distance on the top of the wing) and because of Bernoulli’s principle the pressure on the slower side (Bottom side) is higher than the pressure on the top side, in turn, creates an upward force called lift that explanation sounds pretty good right but the problem it’s actually wrong!
Fluid particles that split off the leading edge of the foil don’t have to reach the trailing edge at the same time! Scientists have proven it through experiments like the ones at the University of Cambridge. The second problem is how Bernoulli’s principle is used to explain the pressure gradient created by the foil, Bernoulli’s famous equation applies to fluid along the same streamline but does not apply across the top and bottom of the foil! So how do hydrofoils actually work, the answer is foils flow through the water at an angle and accelerate water downward and from Newton’s second and third law or force equals mass times acceleration, and for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction if fluid is accelerated downward it is balanced by an upward force like a boat is held up by the downward acceleration of water.
Are you new to foiling? Well, brace yourself because this new water craze is gonna be super fun! Here’s an interesting fact…
You can actually go hydrofoiling with almost any watercraft. You name it – Kiteboards, windsurf foils, paddleboards, surfboards, wakeboards, and even boats!
And if that’s not enough, some smart dude even invented a hydrofoil bike!
These different watercraft offer various ways to ride on the water. But there’s one thing that makes these rides similar. And that is, they all allow you to glide and float over the surface of the water. Compared to the regular surfing boards, this means better speed and less drag.
Excited? Well, you better be. Here’s a quick list of the different rides that you can do regardless of your skill level:
Foil surfing
For most of us, surfing is about catching waves. A never-ending journey of waiting for that perfect combination of the wind, swell, and tide. It’s a tedious process and the challenging part is, you can only surf on a selected few stretches of coastlines that have waves. Not until foil surfing changed everything and made surfing possible in unexpected terrains.
Foil surfing replaces the traditional fin of the surfboard with a mast and a set of wings a fuselage). A dynamic design underneath the board is longer than the fin. It has wings on its base which help the board lift out of the water. When the board moves forward, the foil surfer would glide above the surface and can perform tighter turns. This is due to the smaller surface area being in contact with the water.
What makes surfing with foil really special is that it allows you to ride waves that are thought to be impossible to surf. No more waiting for that perfect wave.
KITEBOARDING FOILS
Kitesurf hydrofoils follow the same principle as foil surfing. The exciting part happens when the board increases its speed and lifts out of the water. What makes it different from foil surfing is that the speed is being generated not only by the swell but by the wind as well.
Kiteboards hydrofoils are faster than any other kiteboard. Why? They have less drag. Riders will no longer feel the rough water surface because their board floats above the waves. You can easily turn faster because the hydrofoil blade will cut the water for you. And this makes kite-boarding more advantageous with a hydrofoil. It makes riding upwind much easier due to the increase in the apparent wind. Hydrofoil made kite surfing become accessible at much lower wind speeds starting even from 4 knots. At kite N surf we offer kite surfing hydrofoil lessons for kitesurfers who have been kite surfing for more than 6 months and are able to ride upwind properly. WIND FOILING
Have you tried windsurfing and been able to cruise at full speed above the water with only 7 to 10 knots of wind? Well, hydrofoil made that possible. Just like kite foiling, windsurfing with a hydrofoil means moving at speed with less wind. This allows you to windsurf using the smaller sail.
Wind foiling will give you the chance to play with the upwind and downwind control. This is achieved when your windsurf board is lifted over 2 feet above the surface of the water. You get more control of the board’s altitude by using your body to maneuver on the water.
Wind foiling is starting to become a trend nowadays. As soon as you experience your first high using the foil, there’s no doubt you’ll get hooked! It’s a new level of experience that everyone wants to try.

SUP FOILING
In April 2016, SUP Magazine published Kai Lenny’s footage when he first tried SUP foiling in downwind. It was such a spectacular sight – he was gliding smoothly and fast over the rolling bumps of the water. It was cutting edge at that time and everyone’s imagination was captivated. No one exactly knew what they were looking at but, surely, it will be part of SUP’s future.
You can do SUP Foiling in two ways – Down winding and surfing. Down winding is harder to do as it requires you to take more practice. You should also be in great shape to be able to maneuver yourself well on the water. On the other hand, surfing is much easier since it allows you to ride the waves for a longer period than you could without the foil. Also, you’ll be able to surf any types of waves that you normally couldn’t do with any regular surfboard.
WING FOILING
Wing foiling, known even as wing surfing is the newest wind and board sport in town. It’s a combination of kite foiling, wind foiling, and SUP foiling rolled into one. How does it work? Well, the objective here is to be able to move freely as much as possible by taking advantage of the energy coming from the wind and swells.
The wing helps you to propel forward using the force from the wind while the short stand-up paddle hydrofoil board gives you a smooth ride. This combination allows you to pick up speed and slowly you will be able to get the board out of the water and ride above the water. With this advantage, you can switch between going upwind and downwind even if you’re just a beginner. Please click on the following link for more info about our Wing foil lessons in Dubai.
WAKE FOILING
Wake foiling is the combination of same as surf foiling and wake surfing. Wake foiling requires first that you get pulled by the boat like in wake surfing and as soon as you get the board out of the water and you manage to catch the wake you can let go of the rope and ride behind the boat. Many advanced riders tend to start in the wake and then they move away from the wake while pumping the foil with their legs.
EFOILING
This is possibly the most advanced of all the available hydrofoil experiences available in the market today. It’s an electric-powered hydrofoil surfboard that uses an advanced lithium-ion battery. This battery powers a silent electric motor that is attached to a propeller that’s attached to a hydrofoil and is controlled by a hand remote wireless Bluetooth. You can ride for over an hour at 20-30mph with every charge.
You don’t need to wait for a good wind, or a perfect wave to enjoy e-foiling. Whether you’re a professional or just an amateur, this water sport is perfect for any skill level. You can literally glide over the surface of any type of water and the possibilities are endless.
